As a prospective Leeds student, you may be wondering what you can expect when you sit in your first college class. I am going to walk you through what my classes look like and what you can expect during your time at Leeds.

IN-PERSON CLASSES:

Leeds offers lots of great study spots, so I usually take advantage of the quiet spaces to do homework and class prep before my in-person classes. When it is time for class, I walk upstairs to my classroom and find a seat. My professors often walk around before class starts to get to know my peers and I. Classes usually include lots of active participation through discussion, clicker quiz questions, and small group activities with the students sitting around you.

HYBRID CLASSES:

As we have adapted to a virtual learning environment during COVID-19, my professors do their best to make Zoom classes as interactive and interesting as possible. Usually my professors play music at the beginning of class, we spend the first few minutes of class talking about our weekend and showing off our pets, and then begin the lecture. During class my professors put us in breakout rooms so we can meet other students, we answer poll questions to gauge understanding, and I can raise my virtual hand when I want to ask or answer a question. After class, I usually stick around on Zoom to ask my professor any questions I may have.

That’s what to expect during class time. What else can you expect from the Leeds curriculum?

EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING:

One of the best things about the Leeds curriculum is that we are challenged to apply the concepts we learn in class to real-world business scenarios. During sophomore year at Leeds, we take a semester-long class where we get to work with companies such as Justin’s Nut Butter, Noodles and Company, and Rachio. We often have guest speakers from these companies visit our classes too!

GROUP PROJECTS:

You may be hearing “group project” or “teamwork” quite a bit when hearing about different university curriculums, Leeds included. The Leeds curriculum has challenged me in the best way to be an effective, respectful, and dynamic team member. As a Leeds student, you are put in all sorts of group projects that continue to refine your collaborative thinking.

WELL-ROUNDED CURRICULUM:

All Leeds students take what we call the “MODS”, which are half a semester long courses on each area of emphasis offered by Leeds. These courses not only helped me decide what areas of emphasis I wanted to choose, but also, gave me a well-rounded idea of each area of business. This means that even though I am a marketing emphasis, I can still read a balance sheet and calculate six sigma, for example.

CUSTOMIZABLE DEGREE:

The Leeds curriculum is easy to tailor towards your interests. Each emphasis has multiple “tracks” within them you can choose from. For example, finance majors can choose between investment banking, investment management, corporate finance, entrepreneurial finance, etc. Additionally, Leeds offers 7 certificate programs which I like to describe as a “mini minor” you can add to your degree to further customize your coursework.

Don’t worry if planning out your coursework sounds daunting. Leeds students have dedicated academic advisors to help plan out your 4-year plan so you can graduate with any majors, minors, and certificates you may want to pursue.
