Mark Yabut

Young Alumni Award

Mark Yabut (BS ’16)

The Leeds Young Alumni Award recognizes a graduate of the last ten years who is excelling in their profession and has embraced their role as a responsible global citizen. This award honors the accomplishments of young alumni who embody the values and ideas instilled by their Leeds education, using their skills and knowledge to do good in the world.

Mark Yabut is an antibias and antiracist edupreneur who enjoys bringing laughter and lightheartedness into spaces he enters. Yabut currently serves as the dean of students and culture for Alliance College-Ready Public Schools, one of the largest and most successful nonprofit public charter school networks in the nation. His work as a dean has led to a significant decrease in exclusionary suspensions for Black and Brown students, which disproportionately impacts students of color due to racism and bias. He is a passionate, innovative and transformational leader who advocates and works towards education equity for underserved and underestimated students of color.

Yabut is the founder of Free Malaya, a nonprofit organization that aims to protect, praise and promote the power of LGBTQ+ youth, especially queer youth of color, through critical mentorship, professional development for educators, and advocacy for LGBTQ+ inclusive school policies. He has over seven years of experience in education ranging from teaching, coaching, consulting and designing curriculum. Yabut holds multiple degrees in business and education from the University of Colorado, Loyola Marymount University, and the University of Pennsylvania.

Yabut continues to explore the intersection of his identities in order to take up as much space as possible as a queer Filipino immigrant in America. He is at his most peaceful and joyful when he is out running, hiking and spending time with his dog!
