Salma Shukri
Professional Effectiveness


Dr. Salma Shukri is a Communication Instructor for the Leeds School of Business at the University of Colorado at Boulder. She received her PhD (Communication Studies with an emphasis in Communication and Culture, 2015) and her MA (International and Intercultural Communication, 2010) from the University of Denver, and her BA (English Literature, 2008) from the University of Colorado-Boulder.

Salma has taught a number of general communication courses, including but not limited to communication strategy, fundamentals of communication, public speaking, (advanced) intercultural communication, interpersonal communication, and qualitative research methods.

As a critical intercultural communication scholar, Salma’s research explores the ways communication—specifically, how we communicate about difference—serves as both an instrument and a barrier to inclusion and belonging. Additionally, Salma engages in methodological research, advancing qualitative research methods through her work. She has published this work in top-tier journals, including the Journal of International and Intercultural Communication and in Text and Performance Quarterly.

Lastly, Salma has held several non-academic, professional positions with local and international organizations in the field of conflict mediation and cross-cultural dialogue.
