Business law course planning: Additional notes

The table above is not comprehensive, but merely represents one recommended sequence for taking the core business curriculum.  There are many courses in related areas (e.g., wills & trusts) that may also be useful to business lawyers.  Thus, all students should take a variety of courses in addition to business law courses.  Courses in intellectual property and employment law are likely to be especially useful.

Critical elements of thinking like a business lawyer include basic substantive knowledge of relevant doctrinal areas; analytic skills (thinking like a deal lawyer); and negotiation, drafting, and counseling skills.  As such, in addition to doctrinal courses, students should strive to take at least one or two courses that include "skills" components such as negotiation, drafting, and counseling.
