Taught by University of Colorado law and business faculty as well as industry leaders, this summer's offerings include two courses for ethics and compliance professionals and a course focused on cannabis entrepreneurship.

"After graduating from law school or finishing other university studies, it can be hard to find opportunities for extended learning," said S. James Anaya, dean of Colorado Law. "We are excited to offer our expertise to attorneys, entrepreneurs, and compliance professionals as they immerse themselves in multi-day courses on some of today’s most cutting-edge legal and business issues."

Cannabis and entrepreneurship

The Cannabis Entrepreneurship Academy, June 13-16, 2020, is presented in partnership with the Leeds School of Business and addresses shared challenges among lawyers and business executives in the cannabis industry. This first-of-its-kind program is tailored for attorneys, executives, and management of cannabis and related companies. The program will cover such topics as financing and banking, state and federal regulatory regimes, and ethical issues.

"Both in Colorado and around the country, cannabis entrepreneurship presents its own set of legal, practical, and business challenges," said Matthew Cushing, director of executive and community learning programs at Colorado Law. "We are excited to bring those challenges to the table and address pressing legal and business issues faced by lawyers and business professionals in this new and somewhat uncharted territory."

Christian Sederberg ('05) has been tapped to serve as an advisor to the Cannabis Entrepreneurship Academy. Sederberg is founding partner at Vicente Sederberg LLP, a top-ranked national cannabis law firm that provides legal and policy services to marijuana and hemp companies, ancillary businesses, investors, governmental bodies, and advocacy organizations.

Confirmed speakers include:

  • Ryan Brown, CEO, Native Roots and Garden Variety
  • John Lord, owner and CEO, LivWell Enlightened Health
  • Patrick Rea, CEO and co-founder, Canopy Boulder
  • Roy Bingham, CEO and co-founder, BDS Analytics

“Executive Education provides a pathway to refine your business skills while learning the latest in new business strategies and tactics," said Richard Wobbekind, associate dean of the Leeds School of Business. "This industry-specific applied learning, along with the ability to network with members of the industry, is a must for career-oriented professionals."

Ethics and compliance

Colorado Law offers two ethics and compliance courses for professionals at different stages of their careers.

The Boulder Compliance Workshop, June 1-3, 2020, offers practicing lawyers and compliance professionals a two-and-a-half day program on key topics in compliance, including data security and privacy, corruption/bribery, and creating an ethical corporate culture. Speakers include David Zetoony, partner at Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner LLP and an internationally recognized leader in data privacy and security. He will deliver a session on General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) compliance.

The Compliance Thought Leaders Forum, June 3-5, 2020, offers a more intimate conversation between executives, regulators, and compliance professionals on specific issues and challenges they face.

"Opportunities in the ethics and compliance field have expanded rapidly in recent years. Private companies, nonprofit entities, and public institutions all exist in an ever-complex regulatory environment and must develop compliance programs to gauge and manage risk, stay abreast of legal obligations, develop controls, and create positive, ethical cultures for their employees," said Melanie Kay, a faculty advisor for the program and co-director of Colorado Law’s Master of Studies in Law degree in Ethics and Compliance, which trains non-lawyers for careers in compliance.

"The need for advanced compliance education and training has increased along with the growth of the profession. Entry and mid-level compliance professionals seek to learn new skills to grow and remain competitive in the employment market, and top compliance executives often seek opportunities to share and learn best practices from other experienced leaders. The Boulder Compliance Workshop and Compliance Thought Leaders Forum aim to fill these needs through multiday educational opportunities to learn and engage with cutting-edge compliance topics from some of the best in the business."
