Julia Martinez

Julia Martinez is a former federal prosecutor who served as an Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) in the Eastern District of Virginia and the District of Colorado.  Most recently, Professor Martinez was the Chief of the Cybercrime and National Security Section for the District of Colorado.  In that capacity she led a team of attorneys who investigated and prosecuted cybercrime, national security, civil rights, and child exploitation matters.

As an AUSA, Professor Martinez specialized in complex, sensitive cases and served as lead counsel on numerous trials and appeals.  Some of the notable cases she prosecuted or supervised include: a prolific hacker who sold victim data and network access on the darknet, a former NSA employee who tried to sell Top Secret documents to Russia, the Club Q nightclub shooting, a white supremacist who attempted to bomb a synagogue, a multi-defendant MS-13 case involving three murders and an attempted murder, producers of child pornography who exploited children online, various computer intrusions, and multiple domestic and international terrorism cases.

Prior to joining the Department of Justice, Professor Martinez practiced at the law firm Jenner and Block LLP in Washington, D.C., where she worked on complex commercial litigation, internal investigations, and appellate matters. She also maintained an active pro bono practice, particularly focusing on immigration cases.  She clerked for Judge Sidney R. Thomas on the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.  

Professor Martinez is a member of the Colorado Supreme Court Standing Committee on the Colorado Rules of Professional Conduct and the Legal Technology Advisory Committee to the Colorado Supreme Court. She is a graduate of Yale Law School and Stanford University.
