MSL Spotlight: Cristal Mendoza
Colorado Law's Master of Studies in Law (MSL) degree is a one-year, 28-credit, no-LSAT-required program that enables students who hold at least an undergraduate degree to obtain legal training short of a full Juris Doctor (JD). Increasingly, emerging job markets have openings that require some legal knowledge and employers are assigning a number of legal tasks traditionally performed by lawyers to non-lawyers. Colorado Law's MSL will prepare students to obtain and excel in those positions. This semester, we are thrilled to highlight some of our incredible MSL students and their journey to pursuing an MSL degree! Next up, meet Cristal Mendoza (she/her).

Where are you from?
CM: I am a Colorado native, born and raised in Northeast Denver!
What inspired you to pursue an MSL degree?
CM: I was inspired to pursue an MSL degree with the purpose of beginning to explore the legal field.
What are your hobbies outside of work and school?
CM: I love to try new things and explore different hobbies; from attending concerts to spending an entire day at an animal sanctuary! I currently enjoy visiting new coffee shops and trying various lattes! In the process, I also get to discover new communities and landscapes in colorful Colorado.
What was your career prior to pursuing an MSL degree?
CM: Initially, I joined CU Boulder with the plan of becoming a Kindergarten teacher. I loved the idea of having my own classroom and knowing I would be in the position to impact a child and/or their families positively. As I completed my first year at the university, I realized there are many systemic issues rooted within the education system. Issues filled with corrupt policies and laws are when I realized I wanted to make a change in people's lives, but I wanted to do it differently. My dreams now are to follow a career in Family and Juvenile Law.
Why did you choose Colorado Law for your MSL degree?
CM: The University of Colorado Boulder introduced the field of compliance to me. I gained interest in the program when I learned it would give me insight into what the JD program and law school are like. I did not doubt that I would additionally meet amazing professors and continue to be presented with exemplary academics.
What are you most excited for this upcoming school year?
CM: I am very excited to expand my knowledge on the legal frameworks and how this Master's degree will help with my career growth, while making meaningful connections!
