What inspired you to pursue an LLM degree?

AG: My parents are my greatest inspiration, and my goal is to provide them with lifelong security. Additionally, pursuing an LLM degree will give me the opportunity to deepen my knowledge in immigration law, one of my passions, and to sit for the bar exam. My experience as an Au Pair in an exchange program opened my eyes to new possibilities, and I never imagined that I would have the chance to pursue a master's degree, especially in another country that I now call my new home. After my LLM, I want to give back to the community by helping immigrants and families in need.

Moreover, I am passionate about animal rights. Unfortunately, in my country, there are not many laws protecting animals. As a volunteer at animal shelters, I decided to establish my own organization to rescue animals and help them find new forever homes. These diverse reasons—my passion for law, immigration, community service, and animal rights—reflect who I am and who I aspire to become.

What is your educational background and what was your career prior to coming to Colorado Law?

AG: I was the first person in my entire family to graduate from high school and the only one to earn a university degree. For us, the idea of attending university seemed impossible. However, I passed the National Brazilian Exam (ENEM), which grants university admission to students with high scores. Thanks to my hard work, I was able to achieve what once seemed like an impossible dream. I was accepted into four universities, all with government scholarships. I completed my Bachelor of Laws (JD equivalent) at Universidade Paulista in São José dos Campos, SP. After graduating, I began my career focusing on Family and Civil Law. My first case was a divorce, and it was then that I realized that this area would be my career focus. Working in family law allowed me to help children and families and build meaningful connections with my clients. Each case deepened my passion for the field and fueled my dream of becoming an LLM student at CU Boulder.

Why did you choose to attend Colorado Law?

AG: When I began my research, I discovered CU Boulder and immediately fell in love with it. It was my first application, and I was thrilled to be accepted. I read about the experiences of alumni on the university's website, which convinced me that CU Boulder was the right choice. My interview with JJ also left a great impression; he described the program and the university's resources for international students in an inspiring way. I was accepted into four other universities, but the beauty of CU Boulder captivated me, and I now know it was the best decision. I love my LLM classmates, and the staff here is amazing. Sometimes, I find myself stopping in front of the building just to admire it. I am proud to be a Buff, and I hope to leave my mark on this place for generations to come.

What are your hobbies outside of work/school?

AG: I LOVE dogs, and being around them makes me feel happy and relaxed. In my free time, I visit shelters to walk and play with dogs. I also love cooking and trying out new recipes. Exploring new foods, flavors, and cultures, as well as visiting new places, are my other favorite hobbies.

What are you most looking forward to this upcoming academic year?

AG: In the coming year, I hope to succeed in my legal career in the U.S., complete my LLM program, and pass the bar exam.
