2014 Colorado Law Bar Exam Mentoring Program

Thank you for volunteering as a mentor for the Colorado Law Bar Exam Mentoring Program, which is designed to help our recent graduates prepare for the July 2014 bar exam.

We are offering this program for graduates with GPAs that signal they might benefit from additional support as they approach a high-stakes, timed exam. In addition, some of the graduates in our program have unsuccessfully attempted the bar exam in the past. We chose you as a mentor because of your personality and judgment. Although your bar exam experience may be dated, we know that your ability to problem-solve and prioritize will help improve your mentee's prospects for success on the bar exam.

As a mentor, your role is to check in with your mentee (review Check In Goals) at important time points during the bar exam preparation process (review Check In Time Points).

Much like a career coach or an executive coach, one of your primary objectives is to provide emotional support on a limited basis.  Another objective is to help your mentee navigate the bar exam by holding your mentee accountable for his or her preparation throughout the summer.  By initiating frequent check ins, you can hold your mentee accountable for measurable progress on preparing for the bar You are not expected to provide substantive help on bar topics, as bar prep courses cover this information in great detail. For specific information about the content and structure of the bar exam, please reference Colorado Bar Exam Basics.

Significantly, all of the mentees involved in this program have “opted in” (meaning they have requested a mentor's assistance) and are enrolled in a traditional bar prep course. The assistance you provide as a mentor is intended to complement your mentee's bar prep course by checking in to assess progress towards completing the various stages of the bar prep process.

To aid you in this effort, please ask your mentee for a copy of the assignment calendar distributed by his or her bar prep course. This assignment calendar should be used in conjunction with the suggested check in time points to help keep your mentee on track throughout the summer.

Again, thank you for your time and your commitment to our recent graduates and to this mentoring program.
