New Student Public Service Pledge Program
Colorado Law has introduced a Public Service Pledge Program this year to connect law students who are interested in public service with organizations and lawyers who need pro bono assistants. Professor Melissa Hart who is the program coordinator for the first year, stated that, “Public service is an integral part of a lawyer’s professional obligation and an essential ingredient in a satisfying legal career.” By giving students the opportunity to participate in public service during school, law students can begin a life-long commitment to public service as well as connect with local organizations that provide legal services to the community.
Students may join the program at any point in their law school careers and pledge to give a minimum of 50 hours of legal service. While students are welcome to connect with public service opportunities on their own, Professor Hart will also connect students with groups by collaborating with law school organizations that focus on public service. Upon completion, the service hours will be officially recognized on the student’s transcript.
In addition, the Program is one of four collaborative Model Projects for http://www.colorado.edu/iece/" target="_blank" title="http://www.colorado.edu/iece/">CU's Institute for Ethical and Civil Engagement.
