Registration and Enrollment Information
The information below can be a guide as you plan your academic course schedule. Ultimately you are responsible for your own schedule and degree plan, including the responsibility to meet course requisites.

Deadlines:
- Please be aware of the deadlines posted in the Academic Calendar as they will have an impact your enrollment.
- We adhere to the deadlines as posted by the Registrar. It is ultimately your responsibility to know and adhere to these deadlines.
Course planning:
- Please take a look at the AES Curriculum, which lists the courses required for the degree.
- If you have additional questions, please contact your advisor.
- You may also run a Degree Audit within Buff Portal to view your remaining degree requirements. More information on how to do so is available from the Registrar's Office Degree Planning website.
Enrolling in courses:
- Current students: You can find your enrollment window listed in your Buff Portal around the time midterms happen each semester. Follow the steps listed on the Registrar's Office Registration website to access your enrollment start date/time.
- If you are an ASEN student, please make sure you enroll as soon as your enrollment window opens as you will have the best opportunity to enroll in your selected courses and sections.
- Incoming students: Please refer to the academic calendar.
Swapping Classes or Sections:
Students are able to use the Swap option to change classes or sections (if the new section is open). More information about how to use this option can be found here.
ASEN 4018 & ASEN 4028 Senior Projects course enrollment:
In the Fall semester, students can enroll into a ASEN 4018 Senior Projects team of their choice. In the Spring semester, students who successfully completed the Fall semester course will automatically be enrolled in their team section unless there are account holds, time conflicts, or maximum credit limit issues. Enrollment typically occurs within the first week of Spring registration beginning.
Registration access during summer:
During the summer enrollment will be closed for non-first year or transfer students which means you are not able to enroll in classes during this time. Below is a link to the schedule so that you can be aware of when the enrollment period will be closed.
Enrolling in Graduate ASEN courses:
- Aerospace Engineering undergraduate BAM students can self-enroll.
- Aerospace Engineering undergraduate students not in the BAM program, as well as undergraduate College of Engineering students, and any other student not currently accepted into the College of Engineering must obtain permission from the course instructor. Upon approval, please forward the approval email to aes-enrollment-help@colorado.edu along with your student ID number, course number, and section number you are requesting enrollment into.
Enrolling in Non-ASEN courses within the College of Engineering:
The Aerospace Advisors and Curriculum Team can only assist with enrollments into ASEN courses. Please visit this site for more information on requesting enrollment in CEAS courses not listed as ASEN.
Enrollment Errors:
Prerequisites or Co-requisites:
A prerequisite course is a course that a student must complete before enrolling in another course or program. Prerequisites ensure that students have the necessary knowledge and skills to succeed in the subsequent course.
A co-requisite course is a course that must be taken at the same time as another course. You must enroll in co-requisite courses at the same time. You cannot enroll in one without the other. The knowledge gained in a co-requisite course complements the knowledge gained in the other course.
If you have questions about meeting prerequisite or co-requisite requirements, please meet with your academic advisor.
Time Conflicts:
It is your job as the student to create a schedule with courses that are required in order to complete your degree. A hard time conflict is one that cannot be avoided between two required courses. If you have a time conflict with your courses, contact your instructors for approval after discussing arrangements on how to make up any missed time/work. Forward the approval to AES-Enrollment-Help@colorado.edu.
It is important that prior to doing so you have looked at all scheduling options and have ensured there is no way to avoid the conflict. Please work with your academic advisor to determine if other options might be available.

- If instructed by your advisor, fill out an enrollment help form
Non-ASEN student enrollment help:
The Aerospace Advisors and Curriculum Team can only assist with enrollments into ASEN courses. Please visit this site for more information on requesting enrollment in CEAS courses not listed with the ASEN prefix. Registration in ASEN courses is not guaranteed.
Account Holds:
This information is available in Buff Portal. After logging in, follow the steps on the Registrar's Office Holds website to access information specific to your hold and how to clear it.
If it is a Bursar's Office hold (i.e. unpaid balances, etc.) contact them - they often will lift the hold for 24 hours so that you can register for classes. Other holds usually need some sort of resolution before they can be lifted.
Waitlists:
Waitlists are a mechanism to help the department assess the need with the demand and can be removed or added at any time to support the enrollment process. Not all ASEN courses have a waitlist.
If there is a waitlist and you meet the enrollment requisites, add yourself to the course waitlist. Directions on how to waitlist can be found here.
If you are on a waitlist for a course, it does not guarantee your enrollment in that particular section. We strongly encourage you to enroll in an alternative course or an open section, as applicable, as soon as possible before the add deadline. Your academic advisor can help you review your options. While we do our best to accommodate waitlisted students, it is safer to assume that you will likely not get into a waitlisted class and plan ahead accordingly, especially in cases where it would affect your full-time student status or graduation date.
Know that the entire Aerospace Department –
- Has your best interest in mind;
- Will ensure that you can take the required core ASEN courses you need to stay on track with a four-year plan;
- Recognizes enrollment priorities and will account for this information when processing requests;
- Will guarantee you will be able to take the courses you need; and
- Cannot guarantee a preferred schedule, or accommodate all extra-curricular activities, work or minor course conflicts.
If you are on a waitlist for a course, it does not guarantee your enrollment.
If you would like to enroll in a closed course that does not have a waitlist, please reach out to your academic advisor for further information. Waitlists may be adjusted during this process and your position on the waitlist could change.
Closed Courses
Some courses have very strict room and/or lab equipment capacities. Enrollment caps may be incrementally increased throughout the enrollment periods to ensure sufficient resources are available for all students. If a course that you need in order to stay on track for graduation is closed for more than a week and a waitlist or alternative section is not available, please contact your academic advisor to discuss your situation.
Dropping classes
Students are able to drop classes on their own, but should be cautious about doing so without ensuring that they either don't need the course or can add another course to replace what is being dropped. It is recommended that students talk with their academic advisor before dropping any ASEN courses from their schedule.
