Certificate in Cognitive Science

Our students become well-rounded critical thinkers who explore how people think, process and learn, and who enjoy careers in artificial intelligence, information processing, medical analysis, data retrieval, education and multimedia.

Our cognitive science certificate allows students to explore how people think, process and learn. Our training prepares students for many of the fields that are expected to grow in the 21st century: artificial intelligence, information processing, medical analysis, data retrieval, education and multimedia.

  • Understand human cognition in the information age
  • Gain training that will complement any undergraduate degree
  • Be prepared for work in a number of growing fields

Experience an interdisciplinary curriculum that approaches cognitive science holistically. Classes are taught in the Departments of Psychology and Neuroscience, Linguistics, Computer Science, Philosophy, and Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences.

Connect with the Institute of Cognitive Science, which fosters scientific interchange from a broad range of disciplines and supports research in cognitive science.

Be well prepared for a variety of career opportunities within the field of cognitive science, from psychology to computer science.

Academic Plan & Requirements

Undergraduate students usually apply for admission to the program during their sophomore year and typically no later than the beginning of their junior year.

Students who wish to complete the certificate are required to major in one of the cognitive science core disciplines:

  • Architecture and planning
  • Computer science
  • Information science
  • Integrative physiology
  • Linguistics
  • Philosophy
  • Psychology and neuroscience
  • Education
  • Speech, language and hearing sciences

To earn the certificate, students must take at least six courses:

  • Two core courses, each in a different core discipline of cognitive science. These core courses provide the necessary interdisciplinary background.
  • Two advanced skills sequences, each of which involves a different core discipline of cognitive science. One of these course sequences can be in the student’s major.
  • Additional credit hours may be required as prerequisites to classes chosen to fulfill the certificate plan of study, but these courses usually also fulfill degree requirements.

Community & Involvement

We offer students many opportunities to network with peers and faculty, further their studies, and get the most out of their undergraduate experience.
