General technical electives are upper-division courses in a wide range of STEM areas. The goal of the requirement is to allow you to expand your field of knowledge in a way that complements your degree, so you should be strategic about selecting courses that will benefit and/or be of interest to you. For example, you might choose to focus your general technical electives on courses related to a specific area of Applied Math or Computer Science. Remember, not every class is taught every semester.

Exclusions

  • A class can be applied toward one requirement in your major only. For example, if a class is approved as both a Humanities & Social Sciences elective and a general technical elective, it can only count toward one requirement, not both.
  • Courses that are part of the core curriculum for mechanical engineering are excluded from the requirement in addition to courses completed through other departments that have been used as substitutes for core classes. For example, you would not be able to count APPM 4650 as both a substitute for MCEN 3030 and a general technical elective.

Approved General Technical Electives

All courses listed below are approved as general technical electives for Mechanical Engineering majors. Where course options are listed as "3000+", all courses within that prefix including 3000 and higher are approved as general technical electives. Please note that courses numbered 5000 or higher are considered graduate-level courses, but can also apply.
