The Department of Civil, Environmental, and Architectural Engineering (CEAE) at CU Boulder is committed to fostering inclusive excellence, increasing diversity and equity, and providing a welcoming departmental community that fosters a sense of belonging, engagement with diverse perspectives, and success for students, staff, and faculty. CEAE will actualize inclusive excellence utilizing the following priorities to guide our values and practices.

  • We seek to cultivate an inclusive community by treating all members of our community with dignity and respect;

  • We value diverse perspectives and encourage active listening and respectful communication. We welcome feedback from all community members with suggestions for continuous improvement;

  • We strive to build respectful and inclusive relationships among all members of our community (students, staff, faculty, alumni, and other stakeholders) to advance the mission of the Department;

  • We aim to equitably recruit, retain, and support students, staff, and faculty;

  • We hold all members of our department accountable for facilitating a welcoming, inclusive departmental community;

  • We do not tolerate discrimination or harassment at any level of our department community;

  • We value transparency within our community about our policies and decision-making processes;

  • We seek timely solutions and resolution to any and all actions of disrespect;

  • We strive to integrate Justice, Equity, Diversity, Inclusive (JEDI) topics in educational and research activities.

We will actively engage in practices that enhance our community’s progress towards actualizing the university’s Diversity and Excellence in Academics (IDEA) Plan and the Anti-racism, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Actions for Change.  We recognize that all members of our community are responsible for our conduct and interactions with each other. The CEAE Department JEDI committee works with department leadership to uphold these principles and support this mission; if you would like to know more about the JEDI committee or its activities, please feel free to contact them directly.

Initiatives

During the 2022-2023 academic year, the CEAE JEDI team will develop suggestions in response to department-specific results from the campus culture survey. Specifically, we plan to work on the following projects:

  • Develop additional guidance for the department leadership team to foster a civil work environment and effectively address concerns amongst CEAE community members.
  • Compile suggestions on inclusive excellence in the classroom and distribute this to CEAE faculty.
  • Create platform for faculty members to acknowledge each other and build community
