A team of CU Boulder civil and architectural engineering students took home first place in the Design-Build Institute of America’s National Student Competition, held earlier this month in Las Vegas.

The competition challenged teams to use design-build methods to submit a proposal for a parking facility on a college campus. The team participated in several rounds of competition before defending their design and construction plans before a panel of judges in Las Vegas.

This was the second year in a row that CU Boulder’s team made it to the national competition. Last year’s team took home third place.

Team members included:

  • Doug Alleman, second-year PhD student in construction engineering management
  • Nathan Klass, BS/MS student in civil engineering
  • Raymond Righi, senior architectural engineering major
  • Shawn Sweeny, BS/MS student in architectural engineering
  • Charles Stephen Von Thaden, senior structural engineering major

The team is advised by Professor Keith Molenaar.

The team poses for a group shot on stage after receiving their trophy. Team member Ray Righi presents the team's work while Charles Von Thaden looks on. Nathan Klass presents while his teammates look on. Charles Von Thaden presents the team's work at the DBIA national conference.
