Canvas

The status of Canvas since the security incident is being tracked in this OIT service alert. OIT is working as quickly as possible to restore Canvas integrations and that work can be tracked on the Canvas Integration Status page (IdentiKey login required).

After a careful evaluation of Instructure’s reinstatement of Canvas following the May 7 worldwide service disruption, CU Boulder leadership has made the decision to restore access to Canvas and Parchment, the platform offered through Instructure used to generate official transcripts. OIT has reinstated access to Canvas, and users should be able to access the platform by visiting canvas.colorado.edu. As we continue to assess the strength and integrity of all systems offered through Canvas, some tools that were integrated with Canvas may not be functional. Additional information about any tools that will be temporarily offline will be communicated directly in the Canvas platform.

We want to emphasize that, while access to Canvas is restored, service reliability of the platform remains uncertain. Canvas has experienced intermittent outages, and additional disruptions may occur over the coming days.

While faculty and students may resume using Canvas upon its restoration, we strongly encourage everyone to prepare backup plans in case Canvas becomes unavailable again.

  • Faculty: Please visit OIT’s Academic Continuity During A Canvas Outage page for guidance on developing alternative methods for collecting assignments, administering quizzes or exams, calculating student grades, communicating with students and more.
  • Students: We encourage you to make it a common practice to download critical course and study materials to your personal computer or laptop, and to back up assignment files to a secure, university‑approved storage location such as your CU Boulder Microsoft OneDrive.
  • Be Wary of “Urgent” Requests: The group responsible for this breach may attempt  to send highly convincing phishing emails. Continue to be alert to unsolicited emails or messages appearing to come from Canvas, particularly any requesting login credentials or personal information. Report anything suspicious by following OIT’s “How to Report a Phishing Scam” guidance.
