Description

The Seasonal Engineering Intern will work under general supervision of the City Engineer. The Seasonal Engineering Intern will perform office and field engineering work involved with the planning, design, and inspection of public improvement projects. Work assignments are made both orally and in writing. Work is performed under supervision and is regularly reviewed through observation, conferences, periodic inspection, and for results obtained. Performs other work as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

• Performs construction inspections for development and capital improvement projects, provides engineering information to the public, contractors, engineers, etc. 

• Prepares graphical design, layout, and drafting duties, either manual or automated, for engineering staff and other departments. 

• Researches property titles and rights-of-way easements using map files and other sources. 

• Performs engineering calculations, assists with preparation of engineering plans, performs minor surveying tasks and GIS Mapping (data input). 

• Performs routine engineering office work, including updating and filing records, photocopying records, documents, and other engineering drawings.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent, supplemented by college course work in computer aided drafting (CAD), surveying, engineering (civil engineering preferred), or any equivalent combination of acceptable training, education, and experience. 

• Experience in developing spreadsheets and databases (Excel, Access, etc.) are important.  

• Must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.  

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Incumbent is regularly required to talk or hear, and is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, instruments, or controls and reach with hand and arms. Occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 

• Knowledge of fundamentals and techniques of civil engineering and computer aided drafting. 

• Knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques of civil engineering related to water distribution, sewer collection, storm drainage and street geometrics.

• Knowledge of basic mathematics, algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. 

• Skill in gathering data and making accurate engineering computations from the data. 

• Ability to learn and apply knowledge of the geography of the City. 

• Ability to use various engineering tools of the trade. 

• Ability to make accurate, neat, and legible drawings. 

• Ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing. 

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. 

• Ability to read maps, legal descriptions, and other legal documents.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of this job, work is performed in an office environment and outside in all types of weather conditions. There is some exposure to fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the office work environment is usually low, while the noise level in the outside environment is moderate to loud.

Not only will PIIE interns gain valuable experience, but they will also receive a stipend of $4,680 for 360 hours over the summer! In addition, interns will participate in professional development days throughout the summer, have access to advisors, and interact with other interns to network and gain additional skills.

Requirements:

·       Must be a full time undergraduate student at CU

·       GPA of 2.5 or higher

·       Must have completed 2 semesters after high school by January 2020

·       Must be continuing as a student into the Fall 2020 semester
