Instructor: Paola Almeida Guerra, Associate Professor, Escuela Superior Politécnica del Litoral, Guayaquil, Ecuador, 3 semester hours, Section 100

Course outline

This course describes the methodologies used for impact analysis of engineering projects considering the cause-effect relationship between the activities of the project and their effect on environmental components such as air, water, soil, etc.

The course includes the following topics:

  • Review of terms and definitions used in environmental evaluations
  • Assessment of the tools needed to evaluate environmental impacts
  • Review of important techniques used to conduct environmental evaluations
  • Practical application of environmental indexes used to evaluate environmental impacts
  • Development of methodologies for Environmental Management Plans focused on the establishment of mitigation measures for environmental impacts

Course Description:

This course describes the methodologies used for impact analysis of engineering projects considering the relationship cause-effect between the activities of the project and the affected environmental components. The student will also learn international laws for the context of proper judgement elements needed to evaluate environmental impacts in developing economies. Finally, the course proposes the development of methodologies to minimize impacts as part of the Environmental Management Plan focused on the establishments of mitigation measurements for predicted environmental impacts.

Paola Almedia Guerra is an Ecuadorian professor and scientist at the Escuela Superior Politécnica del Litoral (ESPOL) with graduate education in Environmental Sciences earning her MSc degree at IHE Delft (The Netherlands) and her doctorate at the University of Trieste (Italy). She is the cognizant leader of the environmental sciences program at ESPOL where she was the Chair of the Department of Chemistry and Environmental Sciences at ESPOL. Currently Dr. Almeida is a visitor scholar at CU. In 2013 Dr. Almeida was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to study the mitigation of mining pollution in the United States, serving her Fulbright tenure here at CU Boulder’s Civil Engineering Department.
