Jury requirements

Freshman BM students

  • A contrapuntal piece; a sonata-allegro movement; one additional contrasting piece; major and minor (three modes) scales to three sharps and three flats, arpeggios in root position
  • Scales: four octaves in sixteenths, mm quarter = 96-116
  • Arpeggios: four octaves, triplets, with reasonable fluency
  • A repertoire list of at least 45 minutes of music, subject to the discretion of the major professor should be submitted at the time of the jury, including works studied during the previous two semesters and not limited to those presented at the jury

Sophomore BM students

  • A minimum of 30 minutes of music with at least three complete works representing at least three style periods; a repertoire list; all major and minor (three modes) scales, arpeggios in root position, first and second inversions.
  • Tempo and distance as above*
  • In addition to the Sophomore jury, all BM piano students will also be required as part of the sophomore proficiency to prepare an ensemble work, approved by the faculty and coached by a faculty member, to be presented in a graded jury. This may be presented as part of the requirements of Independent Accompanying, chamber music, or piano 4-hands course work. This requirement should normally be fulfilled at some time before the presentation of the junior recital

Junior BM students

  • A 45-minute recital, graded by the major professor**

Senior BM students

  • A one-hour recital, with Preview; graded by a committee of at least 2 keyboard faculty members**

Freshman BA students

  • Three contrasting pieces; major and minor (three modes) scales to three sharps and three flats, arpeggios in root position
  • Scales: four octaves in sixteenths, mm quarter = 96-116
  • Arpeggios: four octaves, triplets, with reasonable fluency

Sophomore BA students

  • A sonata-allegro movement; two additional contrasting pieces; all major and minor scales, arpeggios in root position, first and second inversions
  • Tempo and distance as above*

Freshman BME students

  • A sonata-allegro movement; two additional contrasting pieces; all major and minor (three modes) scales to three sharps and three flats, arpeggios in root position
  • Scales: four octaves in sixteenths, mm quarter = 96-116
  • Arpeggios: four octaves, triplets, with reasonable fluency

Sophomore BME students

  • An eighteenth-century composition; a sonata-allegro movement; two additional contrasting pieces; major and minor (three modes)  scales, arpeggios in root position, first and second inversions
  • Tempo and distance as above*

Junior BME students

  • A 45-minute recital, graded by the major professor**

Senior BME students

  • Three additional semester hours, which may be covered by the Keyboard Harmony class; no exam


Graduate students

Graduate students are required to present a jury at the end of their first semester in residence to show that they are ready to proceed to thesis (recital) projects and to gain permission to continue in the program. Students shall present at least three works representing at least three contrasting styles (single movements of large works are acceptable). 

DMA research-lecture procedures

*Self-prepared projects of smaller or larger scope are encouraged within the studios and may be presented as part of the jury at the discretion of the major professor.
**Students are encouraged to explore and present contemporary repertoire as part of the junior and/or senior recitals
