From score to floor: opera from the ground up
By the time an opera production hits the stage, composers and performers have spent years transforming theatrical ideas and music. The interactive CU New Opera Workshop (CU NOW)—part of the Eklund Opera Program—features CU Boulder singers in new works on their way to professional world premieres.
Specifically, CU NOW is an annual three-week (May 31-June 18, 2023) session for student singers and guest composers/librettists to collaborate, explore and actively shape a new work: Imagine music being sung aloud for the very first time after emerging from a composer’s imagination!
Returning to CU NOW is award-winning composer Tom Cipullo whose critically-acclaimed opera, “Glory Denied,” is one of the most frequently performed 21st-century operas. This summer, CU NOW will workshop Cipullo’s new two-act opera, “The Next Voice You Hear.” With the inherent drama of near-constant revelations of corruption and hypocrisy, televangelists are an easy target. But the opera is less concerned with scandal than those aspects of contemporary American life that push some people of faith toward these controversial performers. Public presentation of excerpts and commentary from the composer/performers will take place on June 16 and 18 in our Music Theatre.
Expect exciting insights into the creative process when you experience opera from the ground up at CU NOW!
