Materials science and engineering (MSE) research in the Department Civil, Environmental, and Architectural Engineering (CEAE) concerns fundamental experimental and theoretical studies at multiple length, spatial, and temporal scales of materials relevant to the CEAE discipline.

Students engaged in MSE research are afforded a unique opportunity to engage in interdisciplinary materials science research with world-class faculty while focusing their broader graduate studies on a specific area within the CEAE discipline, including architectural engineering (AREN), environmental engineering (EVEN), geotechnical engineering and geomechanics (GEGM), or structural engineering and structural mechanics (SESM).

The MSE research area offers a wide variety of cutting-edge topics related to traditional and emerging materials systems, experimental methods, and advanced computational analyses. Graduates of MSE research areas will find a multitude of career opportunities in both the public and private sector, including positions in national research laboratories, government, and academia.
