Professor John McCartney and his previous PhD student Majid Ghayoomi, now an assistant professor at the University of New Hampshire, received the 2014 International Award for Best Journal Paper by an Early Career Researcher in Unsaturated Soil Mechanics in the Category of “Application” from the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE) Technical Committee 106 on Unsaturated Soil Mechanics for their paper: Ghayoomi, M., McCartney, J.S. and Ko, H.-Y. (2013). “Settlement Prediction of Unsaturated Sands during Earthquake Shaking.”

The ISSMGE is a global organization that represents the interests of academics, engineers and contractors that participate in geotechnical engineering. The aim of the society is to promote the advancement and dissemination of knowledge in the field of geotechnics.
