MENV Career & Professional Development Graduate Student Assistant 

Dates of employment: 

Mid/Late October – December 19, 2024. This appointment is renewable per semester at the discretion of your supervisor. 

 

Who we are: 

The Masters of the Environment (MENV) Graduate Program at the University of Colorado Boulder is an interdisciplinary professional degree designed to equip students with the skills and experience needed to tackle complex environmental challenges. MENV prepares students for leadership roles in environment, energy, natural resources, and sustainability sectors, providing both academic rigor and practical experience through partnerships with external organizations.  

What your key responsibilities will be: 

The program is seeking a dynamic self-starter with excellent writing and communication skills to help build and maintain relationships with current students, prospective students, faculty, alumni, staff, and community partners. The MENV program prepares students for dynamic impactful careers through a focus on leadership, practice, and systems thinking. The Career & Professional Development Graduate Student Assistant (GSA) will provide general support to the MENV Career and Professional Development Manager and interact regularly with MENV’s other administrative staff. This position will assist with program administration, internal and external communications, professional development/career programming and events, and external relations by interfacing with current students, alumni, external partners, and the program. 

  

About: 

MENV’s Career and Professional Development Manager is seeking a thoughtful, collaborative, and detail-oriented student with strong communication, writing, and interpersonal skills to join the MENV team. The Career & Professional Development GSA will assist with partner engagement, alumni communications, career programming and events. Specific tasks include but are not limited to: (1) developing content for newsletters, digests, website, and social media; (2) coordinating and supporting events and outreach efforts with alumni and employer partners; (3) highlighting MENV alumni career outcomes and employment data; and (4) creating, maintaining, and updating resources for students and alumni. In addition, program staff will build in opportunities for the Graduate Assistant to gain transferable skills necessary for the career they intend to pursue post-graduation.  

 

Program Support 

  • Conduct research on industry trends and review MENV employment data to share key findings 
  • Compile, organize, analyze, and track career services data and metrics 
  • Coordinate scheduling of meetings and compile meeting minutes 
  • Assist with the coordination and management of virtual and in-person events for current students, alumni, and partners as a representative of the MENV program 
  • Provide general office support and assist with miscellaneous projects, as needed 
  • Research potential employers and capstone partners 

 

Content Development & Communications 

  • Develop content for MENV Alumni Newsletter 
  • Monitor the @menvjobs email inbox 
  • Manage the MENV Jobs Digest and career resources 
  • Maintain databases and update the MENV website 
  • Maintain and update MENV’s Career Development Handbook and other student career resources 
  • Respond to inquiries about career development and employment data 
  • Assist with the creation of information packets for prospective students 
  • Attend *all* information session, open houses, and admitted students’ events 
  • Curate content for the quarterly newsletter sent to all internal and external contacts in the MENV database 
  • Post blog entries (2x per month) on MENV website 
  • Maintain social media platforms (LinkedIn)

 

Outreach 

  • Assist with the MENV career, professional development, and capstone events  
  • Coordinate scheduling, travel, and other logistics for field visits, seminars, workshops, guest speakers, recruitment and networking events, happy hours, etc. 
  • Assist with the planning and coordination of community events 
  • Liaise with community partners at MENV events 
  • Act as ambassador of MENV program on and off campus 

  

In addition, the Career & Professional Development GSA will be encouraged to propose a project to work on throughout the spring semester. For instance, one year a student assistant coordinated our sponsorship and involvement with the Colorado Environmental Film Festival, including the organization of a “caravan” event held in downtown Boulder. 

There may be some evening and weekend work, as well as in-state travel, required, but it is rare. 

 

What we can offer: 

The hourly wage for this position starts at $20/hour for approximately 10 hours per week. (Note: some weeks may require more than 15 hours per week, particularly weeks with recruitment, career, or community events. You will know about these weeks well in advance.) What we require: 

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university 
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite 

What you will need: 

  • Excellent professional writing and communication skills 
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills 
  • Strong attention to detail 
  • Experience navigating and reporting sensitive issues or information with good judgement and diplomacy 
  • The ability to work independently and collaboratively on a team 

What we’d like you to have: 

  • Working knowledge and experience with WordPress and social media platforms 
  • Data analytics skills
