How utilities are innovating customer programs for a low-carbon, equitable future in energy
Luke Beckett
Executive Summary
We propose several different research deliverables (written reports) and tasks (market
research support) for the incoming MENV team. This gives the MENV team well-
rounded exposure to the energy utility industry and the opportunity to support multiple
client-facing projects. Experience supporting multiple projects is highly valuable
professional experience for a rapidly shifting energy industry.
The three primary projects to support are:
Accelerating commercial fleet electrification - MENV team supports internal
qualitative/quantitative market research to understand vehicle fleet manager
decision-making processes, implications of different electric rates, sensitivity to
utility incentives, and purchase intent/timeframes for electric vehicles.
Ensuring equitable access to clean energy offerings - Builds off a February E
Source framework on developing and deploying more equitable energy
programs. MENV team supports written reports and research initiatives for
establishing more equal access to and participation in energy programs, while
also remediating social, economic, and health burdens on those
disproportionately harmed by the energy system.
Creating a resilient grid through distributed energy resources - MENV team
supports written reports and research initiatives for utility customer resiliency
offerings. These tasks may include program design recommendations,
technology evaluations, and/or utility marketing strategies for distributed solar,
battery storage, back up generation, and microgrids.
Note – These projects are subject to change depending on MENV expertise, interest,
and E Source 2022 business priorities.
