Boulder Campus Process

Tuition Assistance Benefit can be used by you, the employee, or you may transfer it to your dependent(s).  You must decide who will use the benefit for each academic year, which runs from fall to summer:

Employee

Eligible employees can receive a waiver for up to a total of 9 credit hours of tuition* per year.

  • You must be eligible for benefits. This means you must meet all of the following criteria:
    • Work in a regular, non-temporary position.
    • Work 20 hours or more per week (a 50% or greater appointment).
    • Be in an eligible job code. In most instances, if you are eligible for medical benefits, you are eligible for Tuition Assistance.
  • Credits are counted from the fall semester through the following summer.
    • Credits can be used in one semester or throughout the academic year.
    • Unused credits do not carry over.
  • Employees may take undergraduate or graduate courses, if space is available.
  • Employees must wait to enroll until the first day of the course or they will be deemed ineligible for the benefit for the semester.
  • Course exclusions: audits, study abroad, Continuing Education, Extended Studies, the mini-MBA, the Executive MBA program, the One-Year MBA program and CU Boulder's Part-Time Evening MBA program.
  • The employee is responsible for student fees, and fees vary by campus.
  • The tuition assistance may be subject to taxation and may affect financial aid.
For Colorado residents, each undergraduate student must apply for the College Opportunity Fund (COF) and pay the difference if COF is exhausted. Residents attending CU Boulder must also authorize the COF. Check your campus page for all deadlines.

Dependent

CU health (medical, dental, vision), financial and retirement benefits are administered by Employee Services, the CU System office in Denver that serves all four campuses.

In any given academic year, running from fall to summer, an eligible employee may give their Tuition Assistance Benefit to an eligible dependent or split it between multiple dependents. Multiple dependents must use the same option, either Option-A Home Campus or Option-B Other Campus. Dependents cannot use different dependent options under the same employee's tuition assistance benefit. The benefit cannot be split between the employee and a dependent.

Dependent options

As part of the Intercampus Dependent Tuition Assistance Pilot Program, which runs through the 2019-2020 academic year, a dependent’s tuition assistance amount is determined by which campus they attend. See the table below for details.

Option A - Home Campus

Dependent attends the same campus where employee works:

  • CU Boulder:  Eligible to receive a 30 percent tuition discount each semester throughout the academic year. Dependents may take eligible undergraduate or graduate courses.

Option B - Other Campuses

The employee may receive $270 per credit hour for up to 9 credits ($2,430) per academic year to apply to their dependent’s tuition. Dependents may take eligible undergraduate courses.

  • Employees must waive their tuition benefit for the academic year to allow their dependents to use it.
    • Credits are counted from the fall semester through the following summer.
    • Credits can be used in one semester or over the year.
    • Unused credits do not carry over.
  • The dependent registers on their designated registration date.
  • Course exclusions: audits, study abroad, Continuing Education, Extended Studies, the min-MBA, the Execuitive MBA program, the One Year MBA program or CU Boulder's Part-Time, Evening MBA Program
  • Student fees apply, and fees vary by campus.
  • The tuition assistance program may be subject to taxation and affects financial aid eligibility.
  • For Colorado residents, each undergraduate student must apply for and authorize the College Opportunity Fund (COF) and pay the difference if COF is exhausted.

How to Use Your Tuition Benefit

To receive the Tuition Assistance Benefit, you must meet each individual, step-by-step deadlines listed for your campus of registration, and you must follow all policy guidelines. Employees cannot register until the first day of their course.
