The CU Boulder Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering is now ranked #19 overall in the U.S. News and World Report Best College Rankings for the Best Undergraduate Chemical Engineering Program category for 2021. In 2020, the department was ranked at #25 overall.

The department is also ranked #12 among public chemical engineering departments in the United States. It is the only chemical engineering department ranked in the mountain time zone.

“Our department has taken major steps to improve the experience of our undergraduate students over the last several years,” said Professor Will Medlin, department chair. “We have hired many new faculty in key growth areas for chemical and biological engineering. These hires have drawn from a good mix of early-career, mid-career and senior faculty and have provided the department with new expertise in polymers, renewable energy, modeling and computation and various applications in human health. We have also continued our emphasis on innovative teaching, as exemplified by the department’s popular LearnChemE website.”

Professor Charles Musgrave was department chair for the last few years. He helped lead the department to recruit and retain these highly skilled and respected faculty.

“It is wonderful to see the recognition our department is receiving for all the hard work and progress we have made to assemble an outstanding faculty and staff, recruit fantastic students and develop a leading program in chemical engineering education,” Musgrave said. “I’m excited to see our department continue our quest to provide the best education to develop the next generation of leaders in chemical engineering.”

The College of Engineering and Applied Science was rated #28 overall and tied for #15 among public engineering colleges.
