Shields faculty portrait

C. Wyatt Shields IV comes to CU as an assistant professor from Harvard University, where he worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow. He earned his Ph.D. in biomedical engineering from Duke University. Professor Shields has distinguished himself as a researcher through contributions to microfluidics, self-assembly, active particles and immune engineering. He has published over 25 peer-reviewed articles in scientific journals, including Nature Communications, Science Advances and Advanced Materials. He was also a recipient of the 2016 Dean's Award for Excellence in Mentoring from Duke University. The primary focus of Shields's group is on engineering colloids for biosensing and drug delivery. His group will work at the intersection of materials engineering, soft matter physics and bioengineering. The guiding objectives of the Shields' group are: (i) to make fundamental contributions to particle systems and assemblies and (ii) to apply those principles to tackle new challenges in human health and translational medicine. He is most looking forward to interacting with students, working with new colleagues and contributing to the vibrant and fast-growing research community at CU Boulder.

Shields will join the department in January 2020.
