Trail maintenanceTrail maintenanceThis fall, ChBE students joined instructor Charlie Nuttelman to maintain portions of the Colorado Trail.

Nuttelman has been an official adopter of the scenic trail through the Colorado Trail Foundation for four years and often invites students to participate in maintenance projects. The team, which calls itself “CU on the Trail,” traveled Oct. 21 to Buffalo Creek to repair parts of an 8-mile section of the Colorado Trail.

The group, including students Brittany Callin, Abigail Weeks, Alfaia BaSallom, Joseph Procopio, Eliza Fink, Rachel Choi, Joseph Hicks and alumnus Brendan Brown, cleared downed trees, replaced soil that had washed from the trail and improved drainage to prevent future erosion.

Nuttelman and students also have completed projects near Walker Ranch after the major flooding in 2013 and at Monarch Pass, which they paired with a hike of 13,971-foot Mt. Ouray the following day.
