da Silva earns NASA FINESST

Congratulations to PhD student Daniel da Silva (Advisor: Xinlin Li) for being named a 2021 Future Investigators in NASA Earth and Space Science and Technology (FINESST). Students Sarah Luettgen, Riley Reid, and Kevin Sacca also received the honor; they were recognized in last week's newsletter.

Kintz lands Ross McFarland Student Award

PhD student Jacob Kintz (Advisor: Torin Clark) won the "Ross McFarland student award" from the Life Science and Biomedical Engineering Branch of the Aerospace Medical Association, for his abstract "Estimation and Prediction of Operator Cognitive States Based on Embedded Measures of Trust, Mental Workload, and Situation Awareness". Congratulations!

Marshall earns Provost’s Faculty Achievement Award

Bob Marshall has received a 2021 CU Boulder Provost’s Faculty Achievement Award. In their announcement, the award committee highlighted Marshall's recent high profile 2021 NSF CAREER Award and his Advances in Space Research article “The AEPEX Mission: Imaging Energetic Particle Precipitation in the Atmosphere through its Bremsstrahlung X-ray Signatures, Advances in Space Research."

Morton selected for National Space-based PNT Advisory Board

Professor Jade Morton has been selected to serve on the National Space-based Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) Advisory Board. The panel makes findings and recommendations to the US government on ways to strengthen and expand the capabilities of GPS/GNSS from a user perspective. NASA is the sponsor of the PNT Board.

CU Boulder NSF GRFP information session

Wednesday, Sept. 8 - 10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

The 2021 NSF GRFP Information Session, for all eligible students interested in applying for the Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) from the National Science Foundation (NSF), will be held on Wednesday, September 8th, 2021 from 10:30am-12:00pm via Zoom. Speakers will include faculty who have served as GRFP proposal reviewers and as writing instructors, and current GRFP winners. Note, the GRFP application deadlines start October 18th and extend over the next few days depending on the discipline. After this initial information session, there will be a chance for graduate students to sign up for intensive writing workshop sessions – details will be announced during the September 8th zoom call.

The GRFP is one of the most prestigious awards a graduate student can receive. It provides outstanding financial support and will allow you more flexibility in pursuing your research interests in graduate school. Please register here to receive the zoom link. For additional questions about the GRFP itself either attend the workshop, review the NSF Web Site, or talk to your advisor.

There is also a library of winning NSF GRFP proposals from CU Boulder students in a variety of disciplines available online. Past winners have submitted them with permission to be viewed.

Zonta International Amelia Earhart Fellowship

Deadline: Nov. 15.

Established in 1938, Zonta International’s Amelia Earhart Fellowships memorialize famed air pioneer and Zontian, Amelia Earhart, who disappeared over the Pacific in 1937. By remembering Amelia Earhart through this fellowship, Zonta International encourages and supports women to expand their horizons by pursuing degrees and careers in aerospace engineering and space sciences. In the program’s 83-year history, Zonta has awarded 1,674 Amelia Earhart Fellowships, totaling more than US$11 million, to 1,245 Fellows from 75 countries. It is anticipated that up to 35 Fellowships of US$10,000 each will be awarded in 2022.Smead Aerospace had two honorees for 2021.
