Iain Boyd has been interviewed by multiple journalists on the Chinese spy balloon. The media outreach began with a column he wrote on surveillance balloons for The Conversation, a nonprofit news outlet CU Boulder is a member of that offers academics a platform to reach the general public on research topics. That led to contacts with reporters from the BBC,Deutsche-Welle,CBS Colorado,VICE news,the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, and the ABC News Daily Podcast.

A new paper entitled "The 2022 applied physics by pioneering women: a roadmap" in the Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics documents the work of Sanghamitra Neogi. The paper highlights the work of female scientists across the physics spectrum and notes Neogi's work on surface nanoscale engineering on silicon membranes using molecular dynamics.

Two from Smead Aerospace were recognized at the 2023 NASA Human Research Program Investigators Workshop poster competition:

• PhD student Savannah Buchner - 2nd place in the Graduate Student track
• Postdoc David Temple - 2nd place in the Postdoctoral Researcher track

We are thrilled to once again serve as the 2023 Denver SeaPearch Regional host! SeaPearch is a competition bringing together robotics, engineering, science, and mathematics while building an underwater ROV. We are currently seeking judges to evaluate teams in the SeaPearch competition March 12. If you or a colleague is interested we would love to extend an invite. Applications for the 2023 Summer Resilient Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity Interdisciplinary Research Theme Seed Grant Program are now being accepted. The theme brings together new developments and world-class expertise in disaster resilience, sustainable design, and social justice across engineering and the CU Boulder campus. The grants can fall under three types –  planning, equipment, or REU matching – and range in funding amounts. Applications for summer funding must be received by March 15 at 5 p.m. MT. Questions can be sent to Director Shideh Dashti by email.

The Research Support Office will host an online workshop from 1-2 p.m. on Feb. 22 outlining the ecosystem of shared-user facilities at CU Boulder and exploring challenges and opportunities for collaboration. The session will be hosted by Aju Jugessur, the director of the Colorado Shared Instrumentation in Nanofabrication and Characterization facility on campus which serves 350 users and 170 PIs. Jugessur will describe the capabilities, set-up, operational model, roles supporting and supported by the facility, and access protocols during the presentation. He will also discuss the criteria and a sustainable funding model for a shared-user or core facility designation. Registration is available online and questions can be sent by email to Jugessur.

• We ask for at least a 2-semester commitment for the position i.e., Fall and Spring 
• We offer in-person and hybrid work. Most of our tutoring staff does in-person tutoring and virtual tutoring is offered on the weekends.
