Job Title: Student Assistant
Job Status: Position: 10-15 hours per week
Pay: $20 per hour
 

Job Summary
The student assistant position is a blend of administration, customer service, and peer advising duties. This position assists the Curriculum and Undergraduate Coordinator in the office on the general program administration including answering phones and e-mails, filing documents, making copies, managing public postings, and keeping the copy room organized. During the school year, the Student Assistant works in the office, assists with workshop presentations and events, mailings of the ENVS Newsletter, greets visitors, counsels new students, and assists ENVS students with basic advising questions such as how to sign up for advising appointments, classes offered during current semester, and advising programs through CU Websites such as the Degree Audit on MyCUinfo and advising website (advising.colorado.edu).
 

Function/Responsibilities 

  • Interact professionally among students, co-workers, administrators, and visitors to the ENVS office and refer them to the appropriate people or places.
  • Manage the front end of the office
    • Keep area clean and organized
    • Update handouts and flyers. Check dates and remove as necessary.
    • Answer the phones and emails
    • Organize and distribute mail
    • Typing and/or editing correspondence and publications, and filing
  • Assist current ENVS students with CU advising questions
    Introduce and instruct students on various online resources, including registration and enrollment, degree information, and on-campus resources.
    • Knowledge of ENVS curriculum requirements
    • Knowledge of CU Advising Website (advising.colorado.edu)
    • Help signing up for advising appointments and/or major declaration meetings
    • Knowledge of current and future ENVS courses (from advising sheets)
    • Share methods of maintaining motivation and interest necessary for achievement and for resolving potential conflicts between course requirements and other aspects of the student experience that consume time and energy
  • Be available to meet with prospective students
    • Articulate the basics of the ENVS major and minor
    • Describe the classroom experience for a CU Boulder student (e.g., the professor’s role, lecture and discussion section activities, etc.).
  • Maintain and send out the weekly ENVS Newsletter to undergraduate students using the software Constant Contact.
  • Assist with updating study abroad handouts, curriculum sheets, etc.
  • Act as a responsible member of the program; express opinions for improvements as appropriate and follow through with the administration’s goals and programmatic decisions.
    • Work professionally and responsibly as part of a team as well as on individual projects.
  • Create social media aspects of Department
    • Write and compile photo essays highlighting ENVS major (3 per semester)
    • Search for CU Boulder ENVS related articles on the internet or projects on campus to highlight
    • Help manage and revive the ENVS social media accounts.
  • Help with department programming and events
    • ENVS Graduation Ceremony and associated documents
    • New Student Welcome
    • ENVS functions
  • Run assorted errands
    • Files that need to be hand-delivered etc.
  • Flexibility to perform other office tasks as necessary 

 

Eligibility Requirements 

  • AT THE TIME OF APPLICATION, you must be in good academic standing at CUBoulder, and be currently enrolled as an undergraduate student at CU.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Programs
    • Excel
    • Word
  • Strong Writing and Proofreading Skills
  • Strong communication skills, patience and professionalism are essential
  • Attention to Detail
  • Ability to work independently, sometimes with little instruction or supervision 

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Adobe Photoshop, Indesign, Illustrator experience
