Ergonomics

The Basics of Ergonomics

Ergonomics Resources & Training help to prevent sprains, strains, and other pain!

Ergonomics is the science of fitting jobs to workers instead of trying to get the worker to fit the job.

The goal of ergonomics is to decrease accidents and injuries, along with increasing comfort, productivity, job satisfaction and safety! A well-designed job should not hurt you.

The Three Core Ergonomic Risk Factors:

  1. Force- The physical demands of the job.
  2. Posture- Using the most efficient and safe body position for a task.
  3. Repetition/Frequency- How often you complete specific tasks.

Ergonomics is important because when your body is stressed by an excessive force, awkward posture, or repeated movements your musculoskeletal system is affected. The musculoskeletal system includes health issues that can involve your bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and other connective tissue.

Your body may begin to have symptoms such as fatigue, discomfort, and pain, which can be the first signs of a musculoskeletal disorder such as a sprain, strain, or other chronic issues. Examples of musculoskeletal injuries or disorders can include carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, and low back pain.

EH&S can help employees, students, and researchers identify risk factors that can contribute to the development of work-related musculoskeletal injuries. Please contact EH&S for support and guidance in determining recommendations that can eliminate or reduce these risk factors.
