On-the-Job Injuries or Illness Reporting

Work-Related Injury or Illness

Colorado law requires, “If you are injured on the job, notify your employer as soon as you are able, and report your injury to your employer in writing within 10 days after the injury.  If you do not report your injury promptly, you may still pursue a claim.”

Timely completion and submission of a claim form to University Risk Management and a copy handed to your supervisor will suffice for notice.

Get appropriate medical treatment as follows:

For an EMERGENCY, call 911 or go to the closest urgent care facility or emergency room.

  1. For a non-emergency or any follow-up medical care, you must seek treatment with a Designated Medical Provider (DMP).
  2. Establish contact with your supervisor or faculty sponsor/designee to:
    • Ensure they are aware of your injury/illness.
    • Report any time you have lost work because of the injury/illness.
    • Bring any medical reports you receive to these contacts so they have verification of your ability to return to work.
  3. Follow instructions from the DMP regarding medications, restrictions, and treatment.
  4. Attend all medical appointments. If you have medical questions, discuss them with the DMP.
  5. The assigned adjuster may or may not contact you regarding your claim. If you have additional questions or concerns, contact the URM main office at 303-860-5682 or toll-free at 888-812-9601.

Injury Investigation

Work-related injuries and illnesses are tracked and investigated to help prevent future incidents and to maintain safe and healthy workplaces. EH&S reviews daily injury reports provided by University Risk Management and follows up on injuries when appropriate. EH&S works with the injured party, their safety representative and sometimes other interested parties when investigating an injury. The objective of an injury investigation is to identify hazards having inadequate control measures and to implement containment, preventive, and corrective actions to prevent future occurrences of work-related injuries and illnesses.
