Tom Yeh’s research advances human-centered artificial intelligence by developing methods, systems, and interaction techniques that make modern AI models more interpretable, controllable, and usable. His work examines how people build, inspect, and reason about complex AI-driven systems—including machine learning pipelines and intelligent agents—and introduces representations and tools that expose model structure, behavior, and limitations rather than treating AI as opaque black boxes. Building on foundations in human–AI interaction and AI-assisted programming, his research lowers barriers to designing and debugging intelligent systems while supporting meaningful human oversight. As a broader impact, Yeh translates these research insights into scalable AI education through AI by Hand, an initiative that disseminates first-principles, pen-and-paper approaches for understanding AI systems, broadening participation and improving public and professional literacy in artificial intelligence.
