Post-Baccalaureate Instructor Teaching Responsibilities
General
An Instructor position with the Computer Science Post-Baccalaureate Program is a full-time, year-round teaching position of 80% teaching and 20% service.
The year-long course load is 8 courses - generally, 3 courses in the Fall and Spring (16 weeks) and 2 courses (13 weeks) in the Summer.
The 20% service is achieved by committee membership or service to program goals.
Independent research is possible, as our instructors have been PIs on large grants and can work with graduate students. However, this is not a tenure track or research position.
Format
All Computer Science Post-Baccalaureate courses are fully online using the Moodle Learning Platform. Courses are initially developed independent of instructors and consist of video lectures, quizzes, assignments, projects, and all learning materials. Course design is guided by the general principles of Quality Matters and other evidence based online education research.
Instructors usually teach with video lectures produced by a course developer prior to the start date of a course. Instructors then engage in continuing improvements to existing courses by updating assignments and adding clarifying materials.
In line with Quality Matters and other evidence based online education research, we define the online teaching as including:
- Having an Instructor Presence
- Updating course materials
- Grading assignments and providing high quality feedback.
- Supporting engagement with the material
- Supporting the community

---|---|---|

Office Hours | 2 hours | 2 hours |
Grading | 3 hours | 3 hours |
Homework/Exam Preparation | 1 - 4 hours | 1 - 4 hours |

Total | 11 - 16 hours | 11 - 16 hours |
Hourly Teaching Expectation: A minimum of 11 – 16 hours per course. This should be considered a general guide - instructors are not hourly workers.
Course management of an online course looks different than in a traditional lecture course. Non-content aspects of an in-person lecture need to be made explicit in online learning including:
- Announcements
- Questions and Clarifications - before, after, and during the lecture.
- Nonverbal hallmarks of the instructor presence including enthusiasm, knowledge of materials, as well as interest and consistent engagement with the class.
