Francisco López Jiménez's research into the crystallography of honey bee comb construction is being published in PLOS Biology and has been picked up by the NY Times. The paper, coauthored by Orit Peleg in CS, discusses how bees engineer comb cell sizes by merging, tilting, and layering their construction.

Jade Morton's two volume textbook, Position, Navigation, and Timing Technologies in the 21st Century is now available in Chinese. The original English version was published in 2021 by Wiley-IEEE Press. The Chinese version is published by the Chinese National Defense Industry Publishing House.

This presentation provides an overview of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory’s ongoing initiative to develop sentient materials, i.e., architected systems capable of autonomously sensing, learning, and adapting to changing environments.

The 2025 NSF GRFP Workshop is for all eligible students interested in applying for the Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) from the National Science Foundation (NSF).

Workshop speakers will include faculty who have served as GRFP proposal reviewers at NSF and writing instructors, and recent GRFP winners and will take place via Zoom on 9/3/2024 from 1pm-2:30pm.

A video recording will also be available after the workshop has been completed.

As a PI, faculty member, and overall leader on campus we hope you consider joining the STEM Routes’ Uplift research program for the year 2025-2026. Goals of Uplift:

• To provide a student’s first research experience.
• To provide funds for the student’s research experience, so as to not ostracize under-represented groups who need to work for income to support themselves or their families.
• To provide mentorship and a sense of belonging.
