Smead Aerospace Faculty/Staff News - Oct. 15

The Sisters Program by BAE Systems Space & Mission Systems held their 2024 kickoff in Smead Aerospace last week. The program pairs BAE employees with CU engineering and business female-identifying students for mentoring, engagement opportunities and career guidance.

Congratulations to Marwa Yacouti (Advisor: Maryam Shakiba), who has been selected to attend the CalTech Division of Engineering and Applied Sciences Trailblazers Symposium. She is one of seven students from across the country chosen from 200 applicants to present their research at the event.

PhD student Jenny Horing (Advisor Iain Boyd), Kurt Maute, and Iain Boyd have earned the best paper award from the 25th AIAA International Space Planes and Hypersonic Systems and Technologies Conference. The research, titled “Influence of Active Cooling on Engine Performance by Mitigating Aero-thermo-elastic Deformation of a Hypersonic Inlet”, will be officially recognized at SciTech 2025 in January.

CU Engineering is excited to be hosting Ashok N. Srivastava, Ph.D. for this fall's Moulakis Lecture on Responsible Engineering Monday, October 21 at 5:45 PM in ATLAS 100. Ashok is Senior Vice President and Chief Data Officer at Intuit and is responsible for setting the vision and direction for large-scale machine learning and artificial intelligence across the enterprise. His talk is titled, "AI at an Inflection Point: Leading at the Intersection of Innovation and Ethics, a Moulakis lecture on responsible engineering."

The Summer 2025 AFRL Scholars Program is now accepting applications as of October 10, 2024. The AFRL Scholars program offers a valuable opportunity for students interested in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) to gain hands-on research experience while collaborating with leading experts in the field.

Participants will engage in innovative projects, expand their professional networks, and develop essential skills for future careers.

We are looking to grow our space program this year and have an open position in the area of space propulsion. The position is also open to candidates in other areas of expertise in sustainable space systems including (but not limited to): space robotics, deployable space structures, on-board sensing, autonomy and AI to support space operations.

The Department of Aerospace Engineering & Mechanics (AEM) at the University of Minnesota seeks to fill multiple open-rank, tenure-track/tenured faculty positions over the next several years across the department’s core areas in aerospace engineering research and education: fluid dynamics, solid mechanics, and aerospace systems.

AEM is particularly interested in faculty who complement and expand our expertise in fluid dynamics and diagnostics, solid mechanics and materials, and aerospace systems, guidance, navigation, and control (GNC).
