John Shaw
Deputy Commander, U.S. Space Command • Member 2022 - 2026

Lt. Gen. John E. Shaw is currently the Deputy Commander, U.S. Space Command.  He is a Massachusetts native, and he entered the Air Force in 1990 as a distinguished graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy with a degree in astronautical engineering and a minor in Russian language.  

Lt Gen Shaw has served in a variety of air and space operations and staff positions, from Silicon Valley to U.S. Air Forces in Europe and has commanded at the squadron, group, wing, and numbered air force levels. He transferred from the Air Force into the Space Force in 2020 upon his promotion to Lieutenant General.

He is a frequently-published author beginning with his thesis as 2d Lt Shaw titled, “Optimal Control Designs for an Inverted Cart-Pendulum Array” from the University of Washington to his latest publication, “Sailing the New Wine-Dark Sea: Space as a Military Area of Responsibility.”  Even more recently, an interview with Lt Gen Shaw regarding the current state and possibilities for the space domain was published by Wired Magazine last April.
