The TOEFL exam is required of all international graduate applicants whose native language is not English. This includes applicants who have already studied in an English-speaking country for any length of time.
An acceptable score must be reported directly to the Office of Admissions at CU Boulder (address below) by December 1 in order for the application to be considered complete. There are no exceptions to these requirements. Exams that are more than two years old are considered invalid for admission purposes.
The minimum acceptable scores for the College of Music are shown below (all are for the internet-based TOEFL (iBT). Be sure that your TOEFL score includes all portions of the examination.
- Professional Certificate programs (opera/voice; string quartet; woodwinds): 75
- All Master’s degree programs: 80
- All Doctor of Musical Arts programs: 93
The College of Music has an additional requirement that all students whose native language is not English are required to take an English placement exam with the English as a Second Language Department (ESL) upon arrival on campus and to abide by the recommendations made. Students who require study in the English language should plan on one or two extra semesters to complete degree requirements.
