The College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS) at the University of Colorado Boulder is one of the top ranked engineering schools in the nation and is committed to student success. CEAS is seeking a graduate intern to serve as a First Year Experience Assistant for the 2021-2022 academic school year.

Working under the supervision of the Student Success and First Year Experience Team, the Academic Success and First Year Experience Graduate Intern supports incoming student programs and academic success initiatives within the college. This internship provides have the opportunity to plan, design, and implement small and large-scale experiences for new students, as well as provide one-on-one academic support to undergraduate students.

First Year Experience Duties Include:

  • Assists with the design and execution of first-year programs for new, incoming students within the College of Engineering and Applied Science such as
    • College welcome days (Engineering Launch)
    • Outreach initiatives
    • Summer programs
    • Family weekend
    • First-Year Seminar
  • Assists with recruitment, hiring, onboarding, training, and development of undergraduate student employees who serve as peer mentors to new students in CEAS
  • Manage a team of lead peer mentors, leading meetings and providing supervision
  • Researches, develops, and implements strategic initiatives and high impact practices
  • Enhances the first-year experience and creates a positive transition into CEAS for new students.
  • Collaborates with offices and departments across campus to enhance student success initiatives

The duties of this position may change from time to time based on college need. Duties and responsibilities may be added or deleted at the discretion of the supervisor and/or the flow of the academic year.

Minimum Qualifications:

For consideration, candidates must possess the following qualifications:

  • Actively enrolled in a Master’s Program or PhD in higher education, education administration, student personnel administration, education, or related field
    • Note: You may still apply if Fall 2021 is your first semester of your graduate program—you do not have to have started classes by the time you apply!
  • Have an understanding of, and sensitivity to, transition concerns and obstacles faced by college students
  • Have the ability to relate to students from a variety of backgrounds as well as a genuine desire to work with, mentor, and support students
  • Excellent verbal, interpersonal, and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Enrollment in a higher education or education Masters or PhD program
  • Available for up to 20 hours/week during the academic year and up to 30 hours/week during the summer.

  • Experience working in a higher education setting
  • Experience with new student programming, academic success strategies, or similar
  • Knowledge of student development theory, engagement, and high impact best practices in higher education
  • Comfortable with public speaking

Compensation:

  • This is an hourly paid position typically with a full academic year (August 2021-May 2021) commitment
  • Flexible work hours (design your work schedule around your classes)
  • Comprehensive and on-going training on best practices of academic coaching and student support
  • Pay range is $18-$25 per hour commensurate with experience, with up to 20 hours possible a week during the academic year, and up to 30 hours per week during the summer. Hours may fluctuate during “busy” times, such a new student welcome days
