A $10.9 million grant from the Office of Naval Research in the U.S. Department of Defense will support five Denver-metro community colleges and two universities in an initiative to increase the number of community college students who pursue engineering careers — particularly those who come from underrepresented populations.
Researchers from CU Boulder and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) will be better able to coordinate their efforts with the recent opening of the Quantum Engineering Initiative (QEI) Collaboration Lab on Sept. 26. This new, 1,500-square-foot space in the Engineering Center will encourage cross-campus research and experiments in the high-impact field of quantum engineering.
The Marshall Fire, which spread throughout much of Boulder County including the towns of Superior and Louisville, became the most destructive fire in Colorado’s history. More than 1,000 homes were lost, and approximately 6,000 acres burned.
In a banner year that has included receiving five distinguished research awards, Assistant Professor Wyatt Shields has been awarded one of the nation’s largest and most prestigious awards for young investigators: a Packard Fellowship for Science and Engineering from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation.
The Waterman Award is the NSF's most prestigious award for early-career scientists and engineers, and comes with a $1 million grant to support the winners' research. Only two or three awards are made each year, nationwide, and past winners have gone on to win all manner of major awards, including Nobel Prizes. CU has only ever had two other winners, including Professor Kristi Anseth in chemical and biological engineering.
Provost Russ Moore appointed Keith Molenaar as the college’s permanent dean in late June 2022. He said his time as acting dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Science provides a glimpse into the broad vision he has for the institution and community going forward — one that celebrates interdisciplinary research with strong workforce and educational components alongside an inclusive community-building approach.
