Helios is a test bench system with 3 BLDC motors that will simulate the functionality of Medtronic’s Signia Surgical Stapler, a laparoscopic surgery device that cuts, seals, and bisects tissue. Helios will mimic the functionality of the Signia Stapler with new custom hardware, including one high-performance microcontroller and three motor driver PCBs. Each motor driver will control one motor, which will simulate a specific function of the stapler. One will be for rotation, one for articulation, and one for clamping and firing of staples. The system will be connected to a user interface that will allow the engineers using the system to set parameters and send commands via a laptop to the individual motors. The GUI will be able to receive feedback from the motors and visualize this data. Ultimately, Helios is a new control system that allows the testing of new technologies with the functionality of the Signia Stapler.
