Smead Aerospace Faculty/Staff News - Aerospace Fac/Staff Newsletter - Feb. 21

An extremely well attended visit of high schoolers from the Tuskegee Airmen Mile High Flight program at Smead Aerospace. Attendees participated in a rocket activity and received a behind the scenes look at what it takes to become a student working on the leading edges of technology. Thanks to HP Schaub, Matt Rhode, KatieRae Williamson, Josh Mellin, and Kassadi Gabriel for making the day a success.

PhD student Kawther Rouabhi (Advisor: Tomoko Matsuo) won an AGU Outstanding Student Presentation Award for her presentation titled "Pulsating Aurora Borealis Identification Using Wavelet Scattering and Neural Networks" at the AGU Fall Meeting, Chicago, December 12-16, 2022. Congratulations!

The CU Boulder student chapter of Sigma Gamma Tau (SGT) spent their Valentine’s Day selling “Valentines for Nerds” in the AERO lobby last week. SGT members brought in handmade aeronautical- and aerospace-related Valentines, along with baked goods, to sell to raise money for the National Brain Tumor Society.  Funds raised and donated amounted to $307.10. 

The AIAA-ATS23 committee would like to solicit ideas for topics to be considered for ATS 2023 at CSU. By sharing visions, knowledge, and capabilities, and by developing collaborations at ATS 2023, the Colorado community shall pioneer the aerospace science and technology development in the next 5 years. For compilation, please send Jean Koster,  jean.koster@colorado.edu the two (2) topics that your company, or research organization, considers as THE topics of HIGHEST priority to develop within the next 5 years. Please use “ATS23-topics” as the subject. For each topic you recommend, please give a brief (<200 words) explanation of the importance of aerospace and your organization. Preferred is a <1-page pdf file, including both topics.

The ideas, gathered from this RFC, and received by March 18, will become part of the formulation of the conference agenda.

Every ten years, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine generate a decadal survey for each space science discipline. The science community provides input to the decadal surveys by writing white papers, some of which define innovative space mission concepts. Recently, LASP conducted a year-long science and engineering study to define one such mission concept called the Plasma Imaging LOcal and Tomographic experiment (PILOT). PILOT is designed to explore whether a planetary magnetic field can shield a planet’s atmosphere from erosion by solar wind, or whether it actually expedites atmospheric loss to space.
