Winter break is just around the corner. Whether you live on or off campus, please take a moment to review some reminders and tips before you leave town.

On-campus residents

End of fall semester:

If you live in the residence halls, there are a few things to keep in mind before you leave:

  • Students are expected to leave within 24 hours after their last final. If your last final is scheduled for Wednesday, students are expected to leave no later than 1 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 19.
  • Graduating seniors attending graduation activities are able to stay through 1 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 20, with the approval of their hall director.
  • The residence halls close at 1 p.m. Dec. 19 and reopen Jan. 10. Students will not have access to their rooms during this time.
  • Students with an Academic Year + Breaks housing contract are eligible to stay in their current assignment during the break period and will be sent an email with dining information.
  • Students returning for spring semester can leave belongings in their rooms that they won’t need during the break.
  • Students in rooms with open space(s) are expected to have the space ready for a new spring semester roommate. Roommate information will be emailed as it becomes available.
  • Hall staff will be entering rooms over break for safety checks.
  • Lock your windows and doors, and unplug your lights, computers and appliances (except your fridge) to conserve energy. Turn your heater to the low setting, and take out the recycling and garbage before you leave town.

Beginning of spring semester:

  • Halls open at 9 a.m. Friday, Jan. 10.
  • Students must check in at their hall community center and activate their Buff OneCard at a hot spot.
  • Classes start Monday, Jan. 13, and all students must have checked into the halls by noon.

Tips to get out of town

As you make travel plans for fall and winter breaks, remember that your CU Boulder-issued CollegePass bus pass provides you a great way to get to/from Denver International Airport (DIA) without paying for airport Parking. (Residence hall students with CU academic year parking permits may keep their vehicle in their campus permitted lot during school breaks, unless they have received an email notification with construction or closure alternate parking arrangements. Prior to leaving town, they must relocate their vehicle to the alternate lot listed in the parking impact email.)

Students can save money, while being sustainable, by using their CollegePass for free transit to Denver International Airport on RTD's SkyRide (AB1 and AB2 Routes).

During peak hours, RTD increases their AB1/AB2 fleet to accommodate the influx of students traveling to the airport. These buses can still fill up quickly during holiday weeks, so planning to take an earlier-scheduled bus to allow ample travel time, especially during inclement weather, is advised. The buses depart from each SkyRide stop hourly throughout the day and evening, then return to the same stop.

Off-campus residents

  • Before you leave, find someone willing to clear snow off your property. Snow must be removed within 24 hours of a snow fall, or you could receive a fine.
  • Ask a friend to collect your mail and pick up newspapers and/or any trash in your yard. If you’re going away for awhile, consider the Hold Mail service through the Post Office.
  • Make sure all windows and doors are locked. Move any expensive items such as laptops away from windows, where they may be visible.
  • Set your lights on a timer and your heat to a reasonable temperature to avoid burst pipes (about 60 degrees).
  • Don’t leave pets by themselves. Find someone to take care of them while you are away.
