New data on gender and the awarding of Ph.D.s in Philosophy
Philosopher Carolyn Dicey Jennings (U. of California-Merced) recently compiled statistics on the ratio of female-to-male Ph.D. graduates of philosophy departments in the U.S. Of the 86 departments providing data for the period 2004–2014, CU-Boulder’s philosophy department has the 13th highest ratio: 38% of the Ph.D.’s awarded in Philosophy at CU during this period went to women. Moreover, of the 86 departments on the list, CU-Boulder has the third-highest ratio of female-to-male Ph.D. graduates among all philosophy departments ranked in the top 50 by the Philosophical Gourmet, the most influential extant ranking of Ph.D. programs in philosophy.
