This Week at the College of Music: Faculty and Staff Edition - March 31, 2022

Recent alumnus expands flute repertoire: Kaleb Chesnic has already made his mark on flute repertoire by transcribing all three of Edvard Grieg’s violin sonatas. And in a review of his debut recording with collaborative pianist and alumna Nathália Kato--“Grieg: Violin Sonatas for Flute”--Gramophone praises Chesnic as a “sensitive and virtuoso performer.” Says Chesnic, “What I’m most excited about is for flutists and violinists alike to get to know these sonatas on a deep level.” Discover Chesnic’s approach, his inspiration … and how College of Music faculty supported his ambitious, successful endeavor.

• On April 4, Professor of Musicology Robert Shay will present a talk--“Forgotten Dido: The Curious Textual Legacy of Purcell’s ‘Dido and Aeneas’”--in which he offers new insights into Henry Purcell’s famous opera based on his recent research. Shay’s critical edition of “Dido and Aeneas” will be published by Bärenreiter later this year.
• Congratulations to the Ivalas Quartet for winning Grand Prize and First Prize in the national Coltman Chamber Music Competition! The Ivalas Quartet is the Graduate String Quartet in Residence at our College of Music, studying with the Takács Quartet. 
• Congratulations to Ben Nelson for receiving a Distinguished Engineering Alumni Award! Nelson serves on our Music Advisory Board, and he and his wife Pattie are fantastic supporters of the College of Music. He writes, “They told me I was the first Distinguished Engineering Alumni Award recipient to have such strong cross-connection with the College of Music. Without pausing, I responded, ‘I am the engineer that I am because I am a musician!’”
