This week at the College of Music: Community Edition - March 2, 2023

Jude Dow-Hygelund and Dawna Rae Warren

2023 Honors Competition winners announced: Undergraduate pianist Jude Dow-Hygelund and graduate soprano Dawna Rae Warren were awarded first prizes in the College of Music’s annual Honors Competition; they will perform with the CU Symphony Orchestra this fall. Well-earned honorable mentions go to undergraduate cellist Louis Saxton and graduate bassoonist J. T.  Holdbrooks. Congratulations to all participating student competitors and collaborative pianists! 

Noteworthy

  • New Alex Craig and Christina Lynn-Craig Living Music Award to be granted spring 2023: For undergraduate and graduate students, this new biannual award celebrates the works and legacy of late composer Alex Craig. 
  • Music YouTuber discusses career in CU Boulder talk (Daily Camera): YouTube creator “Sideways,” known for breaking down the music of popular films, drew a crowd at the College of Music talking to students, staff and fans about his online music career. The YouTuber was invited as a guest speaker for the college’s Career Launchpad series through our Entrepreneurship Center for Music.
  • March 4: From Aretha Franklin to Paul Simon to the Sex Pistols, popular performers and bands from the 1970s made waves that ripple through music and culture today. Come hear four CU Boulder faculty—including alumnus Micheal Sebulsky—collaboratively discuss the legacy of such influential artists at Music of the Long ‘70s: Black Power, Punk, Jambands and Jewish Soul, presented by CU on the Weekend.
  • Explore ways to celebrate Women’s History Month, including “History of Women in Jazz” on March 8!
  • CU Boulder musicology colloquium series: Check out the spring schedule! Next up, on March 13, Ana Alonso-Minutti (University of California, Davis) will present “The Mirrors of Sounds in Mario Lavista’s Music.”
  • The College of Music is excited to host the prestigious 2023 National Trumpet Competition this month, March 25-27! Check out the schedule.
