CU Police Advice on Masking in Classrooms

If a faculty member calls CU Police about a student who is not wearing a mask in classrooms, ask them to follow these steps:

  1. Ask the student to put on the mask. Sometimes the faculty has not done this step yet.
  2. The faculty member can also choose not to address the behavior in class and schedule a Zoom meeting with the student and tell them the expectations for wearing a mask in class.
    • Follow up with an email to that student reminding them of the mask policy and that future violations may be referred to Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution (SCCR).
  3. If the student refuses, to put on a mask, the professor should tell the student that if they do not put on a mask, they need to leave class.
    • If the student complies, then continue with class, but they should meet with the student to discuss the situation and follow up with an email reminding them of the policy and that future violations may be referred to SCCR.
    • If the student reaches this stage again, they should file a report with SCCR.
  4. If the student does not put on a mask, the faculty should tell the student to leave class.
    • At this point, the faculty member should file a report with SCCR here.
  5. If the student refuses to leave, they should tell the student that if they do not leave that the professor will end class early.
  6. If the student refuses to leave, then the professor can end class and file a report with SCCR here. They can also continue with the class and meet with the student later to discuss expectations for the course moving forward. They should also still file a report with SCCR.
  7. Inform them that they can consult with Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution at any time about these issues.  They can contact us at studentconduct@colorado.edu or (303) 492-5550.
