Our company, Qualcomm, develops chips for cell phones in the 400 MHz to 6 GHz range. They have a test bench with a jumble of cables that they assigned us to measure for insertion loss and for proper connectivity. For our capstone, we built a precision RF test system designed to measure insertion loss and cross-talk of a “black box” network of cables, spanning a frequency range of 400 MHz to 6 GHz for Qualcomm. There are several essential components in our system; the HackRF (to generate the signal), the multiplexer board (to switch between ports), the custom receiver board assembly (to measure the signal power) and the microcontroller board (to control the system and store data). Our system performs two sweeps, one for calibration and the second to measure the insertion loss and crosstalk of the DUT (black box). Once the sweeps are complete, the system outputs all measurements to a text file, which is then used to generate a visual model. The text file data will be used by Qualcomm to calibrate their test system and make sure that all their cables are connected inside the DUT.
