New takes on a traditional tune: Jazz program arranges, records 3 styles of ‘Pomp & Circumstance’
“As students and families prepare for the 2024 commencement ceremony at CU Boulder on May 9, there’s a buzz of excitement surrounding a unique musical endeavor set to take center stage. The College of Music’s Thompson Jazz Studies Program is providing this year’s graduates with new takes on the timeless rendition of Sir Edward Elgar’s ‘Pomp & Circumstance’ theme.” The traditional graduation march has been reimagined by Associate Professor of Jazz Studies Paul McKee in three distinct, captivating styles: Latin jazz, New Orleans funk and big band swing!

• Donor support puts Glenn Miller collections in the spotlight: Ahead of International Jazz Day on April 30, we’re pleased to share that CU Boulder’s vast and historically valuable Glenn Miller collection is set to take the spotlight, thanks to a philanthropy-funded archiving project. We’re so grateful for this unique donation that impacts our College of Music and CU Boulder Libraries, preserving an important period of American history that has yet to be preserved and digitized.
• Michael Sy Uy to direct American Music Research Center (AMRC): We’re thrilled to announce that Uy will join the College of Music’s musicology faculty as an associate professor and assume leadership of the AMRC this fall, bringing to his new responsibilities a rich background in musicological research as well as a broadly-based perspective on academic administration.
• Congrats to our new Associate Professor of Bass Susan Cahill who will guest star on PBS Great Performances’ “Now Hear This” on May 3; and to Assistant Professor of Voice Andrew Garland who will be teaching several courses on the tonebase Voice platform.
• We’re super proud of alumna Hannah Darroch (MM ’12) who’s the new executive director of the SOUNZ Centre for New Zealand Music! At CU Boulder, Darroch was a teaching assistant to our Professor of Flute Christina Jennings. 
• Special guests: On tour across the Front Range, the Uvalde High School Mariachi Band—“Los Coyotes”—is visiting our College of Music today! 
• May 17 application deadline: The Aspen Music Festival And School partners with ArtistYear to bring teaching artists to Colorado’s Roaring Fork Valley each school year. For the 2024-25 school year, the AMFS is seeking string players, classical guitarists and vocalists/pianists who are interested in teaching artist work. AMFS ArtistYear Resident Teaching Artists are placed in both public school classrooms in Basalt, Carbondale and Glenwood Springs and in AMFS AfterWorks music education programs.
